Storytelling, concrete and strong ending

In this speech at TEDxGothenburgUniversity from december 2011 Jan Eliasson starts with a good illustration of the  the power of storytelling. “I will take you on a helicopter ride”. By painting a visual picture of his experience he engages the senses of the audience. We can see through his eyes and join him as he flies over the tents of the refugee camps.

He also shows the power of being concrete and of using a simple, clear and tangibe example. “This glass of water is a dream for 858 million people around the world.” In doing so he boiles down a complicated issue to its core and makes it understandable for everyone.

After 13.00 minutes he goes into his conclusion with the nice phrase “non one can do everything but everybody can do somehting”.  He gives us a call to action before leading into the quote he has clearly memorized to end with. “We need passion and compassion. Withou passion nothing happens in life and without compassion, the wrong things happen”.
